3 Things You Should Know About Your Sunscreen

3 Things You Should Know About Your Sunscreen

So what we do know from the SunsSmart Website is that in New Zealand the UV (ultra violet) levels are at their highest between the months of September through to April.

There are obvious words of wisdom on the whole range of sun protection and for sunscreen we've picked out at least 3 things you should know about your sunscreen for home, work and play.

Always Use At Least SPF30 Sunscreen

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor.  So the higher the number the higher the protection however SunSmart rightly point out other sun protection factors should be used e.g. wearing a hat, sunglasses and sitting in shade.

How Often Should You Apply Sunscreen?

SunSmart advise to use the two coat approach and apply 20 minutes prior to being exposed and again 20 minutes after being in the sound.

Then reapply every two hours at least or after swimming, excessive sweating, exercise, towel drying etc to stay protected.

Remember sunscreens have an expiry date so check your sunscreen at home and work to make sure you're still in date.

Just Remember ...

Our last piece of advice is to make sure you don't miss all those little tricky bits when you're apply sunscreen.

If you've ever had sunburnt tops of your feet or ears then you'll know exactly what we mean!  These are often areas we forget to apply sunscreen too so if you're on a worksite or chilling by the pool apply to any patch of skin that is exposed to the sun.

If you're in the workplace then WorkSafe's Protecting Workers From Solar Radiation says:

“Personal protection is an important component in any plan to control exposure to solar radiation. An effective plan will usually involve protective clothing, hat and a sunscreen. Complete reliance should not be placed on any one form of protection. Sunscreen should be applied to all uncovered skin.”

Our Sungard Sunscreen range comes in various sizes, is SPF50 and contains Manuka Honey, Aloe Vera & Vitamin E to moisturise and condition the skin.
